A difficult to use small garden arranged over many levels is converted into a modern and spacious low maintenance entertaining area. The use of high quality materials, angular design and minimalist planting mean that this outdoor room complements the client’s stylish home and its prestigious location.
This end terracce in North London was not looking its best due to a previous owner's love of concrete, crazy paving and ceramic tiles! The client had a strong design sense and requested a Japanese feel but without the maintenance demands of a water feature or raked gravel.
The client’s wish list was a long one: large entertaining space, all weather play area for the children, exotic planting, fruit and vegetable growing area, and chickens… Luckily the end of this large garden was an overgrown wilderness just waiting for a radical makeover.
A steeply sloping garden with serious drainage problems was neglected and unsuitable for a family of keen gardeners with active children. An extended patio, retaining walls, lighting, an altered slope, a new lawn and generous beds provide a practical space with room to grow.
The clients had invested in extensive interior renovation of their large Victorian terrace house. However the old fashioned and unkempt drive and path let the house down and was impractical. The brief was to create an approach to the house in keeping with the contemporary and elegant interior but without creating excessive maintenance requirements.
Garden flats in Belsize Park can command premium rents but not when the outside space lets down the inside. The careful choice of materials and plants will ensue that this garden continues to grab the attention of potential tenants without the need for frequent maintenance by the landlord.
